Nethercote Produce Markets
Nethercote is a great place for growing your own veggies, particulary root vegetables. Nethercote's cold climate also makes it a great place for growing a range of fruit, inlcuding a variety of apples, stone fruit & citrus.
Fresh food production is being actively encouraged within Nethercote and neighbouring areas by a group of locals keen to promote vegetable growing for healthy lifestyle reasons and to grow sufficient excess to sell at Nethercote's Seasonal Produce Markets, which are held quarterly in and around the community hall. The rules for selling produce at thes markets simple:
-
Any money you make from sales is yours
-
You pay a small fee for your stall to help cover costs ($10)
-
The markets are run on a non-profit basis by Karen Lott and Barbara Greenwood who just like the idea of getting fresh and locally grown produce at great prices to the market place.
-
The seasonal produce markets have nothing to do with the Nethercote Residents' Association Inc., although NRAI does run a market stall selling excellent breakfasts
-
You don't have to have a lot of produce available to take part in the market. You don't even have to have your own stall. Even if you only have half a bucket of tomatoes or green beans to sell, you can leave it with the general garden stall and you'll be paid for it
-
Experience, so far, with every market , has been that demand always outstrips supply
-
Should there be any excess, there are restaurants and shops always ready to buy it.
-
Seasonal Produce Markets are kept afloat with income from stall rentals, sales of tea and coffee, and from the market raffle which is always a fabulous hamper, made up on the day from generous donations of produce from stallholders..
To encourage and assist people in their growing enterprises, occasional informal information/question & answer sessions are held when local growers (professionals and gifted amateurs) share their knowledge and experience. These sessions will be listed in the "Events" section on this website. Also available at these sessions:
-
planting guides and calendars
-
useful handouts - such as recipes for organic weed sprays
-
a seedbank (set up and donated by Bega Valley Seed Savers Group) for purchase or exchange of seeds
-
free seedlings may be available to help new growers
